  • The tour starts at 6.00pm on Saturday 4 April, at our hotel (to be advised) in Istanbul.

    The tour ends after breakfast on Thursday 16 April, at our hotel (to be advised) in London.

  • $8,995 AUD per person, twin share (land content only)
    $1,485 AUD supplement for sole use of a hotel room

    • A $500 non-refundable deposit is needed to secure your place on this tour.

    • In October 2025 we will confirm the workshops and performances and send you an invoice for a second non-refundable $1,000 to cover the cost of tickets/participation.

    • If there has been a change in the workshop/performance program and you are not satisfied with the final itinerary, you can withdraw from the tour within 14 days of receiving the final version and receive a full refund of your deposit.

    • One way economy class airfare from Kusadasi to London (including taxes)

  • In most cases, this tour will be fully tax deductible for full or part time Drama teachers. Please speak to your tax agent for professional advice. Some teachers may be able to have all or part of the tour fee subsidised by their school’s professional development program (letter of support available on request).

 

Tour Overview

Academy Travel is delighted to present an outstanding professional development opportunity for Australian Drama teachers.

This 13-day program is designed to enhance your knowledge and classroom skills in key areas related to the teaching of high school drama.

Travelling to great European destinations in Turkey and the UK including Istanbul, Kusadasi, London and Stratford-upon-Avon, this itinerary includes performances and activities forming an eclectic mix of theatre, cultural experiences and an opportunity to view the destinations through a dramatic lens.

The program features a blend of five live performances, hands-on activities, in-depth workshops and guided tours as well as great opportunities for networking and discussions.

Professional Learning Hours

You will be able to register up to 30 hours (based on the current itinerary) in your NESA teacher accreditation hours.

We will supply you with advice on suggested standards and outcomes in ETAMS to attach to these hours before departure.

Your Tour Leader

Jane Simmons is an experienced teacher, marker, coordinator and drama administrator with an extensive portfolio of leading camps, festivals, performances and ensembles.

She has been performing short and long form improvisation for over 25 years in Sydney and internationally and trained with Improvisation Guru Keith Johnstone and Chicago IO teachers Bill Arnett and Lyndsay Hailey. She has presented at State, National and International Drama conferences to enthusiastic teachers and improvisers and was recognised as an Arts Leader by The Australian College of Educators in 2015 and was the recipient of a Lifetime Member Award by Drama NSW in 2021.

Jane will facilitate critical analysis of the performances attended and assist in applying this knowledge and training to the classroom throughout the tour.

 

Tour Itinerary

Istanbul (2 nights), Kusadasi (2 nights), Stratford-upon-Avon (3 nights), London (5 nights)

  • Day 1 | SATURDAY 4 APRIL

    Arrive Istanbul
    Meet your Tour Leader and fellow participants in the hotel lobby at 6:00pm before enjoying a Welcome Dinner at a local restaurant. Overnight Istanbul (D)

  • Day 2 | SUNDAY 5 APRIL

    Exploring Istanbul
    With your Tour Leader, explore the historical and cultural city that is Istanbul. On a guided tour, visit the underground ancient cisterns that lay beneath the city, the Hippodrome (known now as Sultanahmet Square) that was the sporting and social centre of Constantinople and the famous Ottoman-era, Blue Mosque. Complete your day visiting the Hagia Sophia Grand Mosque, a mosque, museum and former church and one of the world’s greatest monuments. Overnight Istanbul (B)

  • Day 3 | MONDAY 6 APRIL

    To Kusadasi
    After a journey through the dramatic landscapes of Turkey, arrive at Izmir and visit the Agora Open Air Museum located in the city centre. Dating back to Roman times, the Museum is considered the biggest ancient market in Izmir. Look out for the portrait of Faustina, the wife of Emperor Marcus Aurelius, which graces the arch of the marketplace’s West Gate, or the thousands of graffiti works dating from the 2nd to the 4th century, which adorn the walls of the ancient stores. Continue your journey to Kusadasi for a local dinner in this seaside village. Overnight Kusadasi (B, D)

  • Day 4 | TUESDAY 7 APRIL

    Ephesus
    This morning, visit the spectacular Ephesus Archaeological.  Ephesus is renowned for its Great Theatre, one of the largest and most magnificent theatres in the ancient world. Built into the slope of Mount Pion during the Hellenistic period, the theatre was expanded and renovated by the Romans. This grand structure played a crucial role in the social and cultural life of Ephesus. Later this day, participate in a moving workshop at the Ephesus Museum. The workshop is designed to develop creative thinking and interpretation skills while tracing the past by examining the works in the museum. You will bring observations on historical objects to the stage with interactive drama and improvisation techniques. While activating the imagination with various exercises, you will have an experience intertwined with history and art. Overnight Kusadasi (B)

  • Day 5 | WEDNESDAY 8 APRIL

    To the United Kingdom
    After a short flight to London, transfer by coach to Stratford-upon-Avon, the home of Shakespeare. The remainder of the day will be at leisure to get to know this significant town. Overnight Stratford-upon-Avon (B, D)

  • Day 6 | THURSDAY 9 APRIL

    Royal Shakespeare Company
    Today will be one of the educational highlights of the tour, as you participate in a full day workshop with the world-renowned Royal Shakespeare Company. The interactive workshop will provide an opportunity to meet the actors, explore the plays and build on your understanding of Shakespeare’s writings and language. Overnight Stratford-upon-Avon (B)

  • Day 7 | FRIDAY 10 APRIL

    Shakespeare’s Stratford
    Today you will have the opportunity to delve into the life and times of Shakespeare by visiting Shakespeare’s Birthplace, Shakespeare’s New Place and Anne Hathaway’s Cottage. See how he grew up, what inspired his works and how he became the most famous playwright in the world. In the afternoon, have a very English afternoon enjoying High Tea at one of the local teahouses. This evening, enjoy a performance at the Royal Shakespeare Company. Overnight Stratford-upon-Avon (B, AT)

  • Day 8 | SATURDAY 11 APRIL

    London and the West End
    This morning, transfer to one of the world’s capitals of theatre, London. Start your experience of London with a guided tour of the West End getting to know the history and the highlights of this iconic area. You will hear stories about the famous stages that night after night showcase the best in theatre and host some of the most famous names to tread the boards. Tonight, enjoy your first performance on the West End. Overnight London (B, D)

  • Day 9 | SUNDAY 12 APRIL

    London Workshop No.1 - Accents
    This morning, embark on your first workshop in London with a local accents master (TBC). The workshop will give you the vocal training to perfect your local accents. You will also workshop how to develop your ability to model and teach accents in a school setting. In the afternoon, you will take a guided tour of the Theatre Royal Drury Lane. Drury Lane’s legacy as a home for visually staggering set-pieces began in the late 19th century after a succession of adventurous managers - most notably FB Chatterton, Augustus Harris, Arthur Collins and Alfred Butt - had made it London’s go-to destination for lavish musicals. Tonight, it’s back to the West End for another stella performance. Overnight London (B)

  • Day 10 | MONDAY 13 APRIL

    London Workshop No.2 - Accessibility
    Today’s morning workshop will be facilitated by Sam Brewer, an actor, voice-over artist, theatre-maker, educator and access consultant. Sam will workshop with the group accessibility through play and creating shows for actors with disabilities. Afterwards, enjoy a typical English pub lunch (own expense) before having time at leisure to see more of London. Tonight, marvel at another performance on the West End. Overnight London (B)

  • Day 11 | TUESDAY 14 APRIL

    London Workshop No.3 – Devising Theatre
    This morning, take part in your next drama workshop with the Gecko Theatre (TBC). The workshop will give you the chance to experience Gecko’s unique style of movement and physical theatre, as well as an opportunity to gain an insight into the creative processes Gecko’s devising performers use when creating a show. The rest of the day is at leisure. Overnight London (B)

  • Day 12 | WEDNESDAY 15 APRIL

    London Workshop No.4 – Physical Theatre
    Experience the Frantic Assembly way at your last workshop in London (TBC). Frantic Assembly workshops, known for their “Frantic Method,” teach collaborative and physical theatre-making techniques, including warm-ups, games, choreography, devising, text and movement, empowering participants to create complex work safely and creatively. After the workshop, enjoy a matinee on the West End before sitting down to enjoy the company of your group at your Farewell Dinner. Overnight London (B, D)

    Depart London
    The tour will conclude after breakfast. (B)

 

Hotels

All the hotels selected by Academy Travel offer good facilities, secure locations and free wi-fi (however some may only offer access in the public areas of the building).

All rooms are twin-share with private bathrooms. Single rooms may also be available on request for an additional supplement. The hotels will generally be of a 3-star quality in central locations, with access to public transport, restaurants and important sites.

The hotels will be advised in your tour documentation provided approximately 6 weeks prior to departure. Examples of hotels we use in the UK and Europe include:

PRACTICAL INFORMATION

  • Whilst we endeavour to deliver the entire program as planned, we may need to alter aspects of the itinerary for various reasons beyond our control. The itinerary may change in the following circumstances:

    • Availability of flights or bookings;

    • Availability of workshops

    • Safety or security concerns in certain areas, cities or countries;

    • A change in DFAT travel advisories; or

    • Weather conditions or unforeseen interruptions

  • Academy Travel is a fully licensed travel agent. Academy Travel is able to arrange flights on your behalf. Please get in touch with your Academy Travel Consultant for this tour if you would like us to provide you with a quote. You should budget between $2,500 and $3,000 for return economy flights. We can also provide a quote for airport transfers and pre or post tour hotel accommodation.

  • Your passport must be valid until 16 October 2026 or will require renewal prior to travel. You will need to provide a photocopy of the photo page of your passport as part of the booking process or when renewed.

    Australian passport holders do require a visa for entry into Turkey which will be processed by Academy Travel. For entry into the UK, Australian passport holders need to apply for an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA). You will need to download the UK ETA app to apply. Non-Australian passport holders will be advised of their visa requirements after confirmation of booking, however, it remains the responsibility of the individual traveler to ensure this process is completed.

  • Breakfast is included each day and is usually a continental buffet provided within the hotel.

    There are 5 included group dinners in the program. Included dinners are usually a set 2/3-course group menu at a local restaurant with a soft drink/beer/wine included. The restaurants are selected for their location and atmosphere. Lunches are generally arranged independently.

    Please advise us of any special dietary requirements on your booking form so we can best accommodate them.

  • Academy Travel requires that all participants have comprehensive travel insurance. We can arrange a policy with Covermore.  Please indicate on your booking form if you are interested in a quote for travel insurance and we will provide you with the link to the Product Disclosure Statement. Please note that additional premiums may apply due to age, pre-existing medical conditions and/or additional travel.

  • A moderate level of physical fitness will be required in order to participate in the tour. Specifically you should be able to do the following:

    • Keep up with the group at all times

    • Walk unassisted for up to three to four hours with only short breaks

    • Negotiate steps and slopes which are often uneven and unstable

    • Get on and off coaches/public transport unassisted

    • Move around airports with luggage unassisted (porterage not included)

    If you are concerned about your ability to meet the requirements of the trip we urge you to contact us for further information and to consult your medical practitioner for an honest assessment. The Tour Leader may instruct you to take time out of the tour program if they consider that you will slow the group down or are at risk of injury or illness.

  • We welcome partners of teachers to accompany them on tour, and we do understand that not all activities may be of interest to non-teachers. Alternative activities for accompanying partners can be suggested by the tour manager (please note there are no refunds/discounts for unused portions of the tour). Non-teachers with a strong interest in the subject matter are also welcome.
